Pregnancy and birth are the most magical period in a women’s life. The first few months of having a newborn at home can be quite overwhelming. In the joy of welcoming a new member to the family, new mothers often tend to forget that they are important to the whole process of conception and birth and they tend to neglect their own need to rest and recover after the child’s birth. Post-natal period is a transformative and reinforcing phase, where there is a total variation in the social environment to being a mother.

So, it is really important not to forget to take care of yourself. Your baby needs you to be as healthy as you can be. Your body goes through many changes over the period of pregnancy. The process of delivering a baby is a strenuous procedure. During this process a woman can undergo severe stress and strain— both physically and mentally. So, it is essential to give yourselves the time, a little bit of extra effort to recover yourself from this period.  It is important to understand that while the new baby depends completely on us for their wellbeing, we have just undergone an incredible transformative process. We deserve rest and healing.

Ayurveda and postpartum care

The wellbeing of new mothers is at the heart of the centuries old practice of Ayurveda. The special branch of Ayurveda “Prasuti Tantra-Striroga” devotes itself to women’s health especially during pregnancy and postpartum period. The science gives great emphasis on the value of caring for the mother prior to, during and following the period of pregnancy. Even centuries before Ayurveda have always stressed the value of safe motherhood. The post delivery is known as “Soothika Kala”, a term derived from the word “Prasuta” or the mother who have recently given birth. Different supportive post-delivery measures are adopted around the world. Ayurveda advocates to practice “Soothika Paricharya” within 45-90 days after delivery or before the beginning of next menstrual cycle to ensure good results.
